Organisation - definition
Organisation is a term that is frequently used to refer to businesses, companies, societies and corporations. These are usually formal organisations of people which are united in striving toward a certain goal, usually for a profit eg, constructing buildings or making clay bricks. Charities are also organisations which exist to perform good deeds, not usually for a profit.
Other types of organisation include, retailers, educational establishments, institutions, community groups and so on.
Typically, organisations have their own ‘culture’ – a set of values and beliefs such as business practices, customs and traditions, as well as the terminology they use to operate on a daily basis. One company may be very employee focussed, while another in the same industry may be more focussed on increasing sales.
An organisation’s culture can differentiate it from other organisations and gives those within it a sense of identity, purpose and possibly pride. It can also provide a cohesive force which binds employees together.
Company cultures can also have a negative effect, acting as powerful barriers to organisational change.
